Online medical assistant courses are designed to provide students with the same type of training they would acquire in a traditional classroom setting. In comparison to their conventional counterparts, however, online courses are generally much more affordable and considerably easier to fit into one’s schedule. Several different types of courses are generally offered by online medical assistant programs – each of which is reviewed in this article.
Types of Online Medical Assistant Courses
Although most medical assistant online courses focus on providing students with a well-rounded curriculum that is suitable for working in both clinical and administrative roles, some offer certificates or diplomas instead of a medical assistant degree. It is additionally possible to find courses that offer more specialized training in addition to the basics.
Medical Assistant Diploma Courses
Some accredited medical assistant schools online feature courses that make it possible for students to earn a medical assistant diploma in as little as nine months. These classes teach the relevant sciences (e.g. physiology and anatomy) as well as specific skills needed in the medical assisting profession, and offer the fastest route to employment for those who are eager to begin their careers quickly.
The downside to this option, however, is that certificates and diplomas do not carry nearly the same amount of weight with employers that degrees do. Your earning potential, and job opportunities, will be significantly better with a more advanced degree.
Medical Assistant Degree Courses
Medical assistant online degree programs require an average of two years to complete and, for all intents and purposes, award the equivalent of an associate’s degree. The primary difference from the aforementioned diploma courses is that degree programs include basic education classes and other types of training that allow the graduate to hold a wider range of responsibilities – not to mention earn a higher medical assistant salary.
Specialized Training Courses
For those who are interested in becoming a medical assistant specialist, there are online medical assistant course offered in a variety of specific medical fields. For example, courses in podiatry can prepare the student to work as a specialist in support of a podiatrist.
Generally speaking, specialists are paid much higher salaries than are medical assistant generalists, and also have the added bonus of working in a field that interests them.
Which Online Medical Assistant Courses are Best?
Deciding which type of medical assistant course will best prepare you for your chosen career involves making sure that the school is properly accredited, and that its course offerings align with your objectives. Regardless of which type you ultimately choose, it is important to keep in mind that you will still be required to pass a medical assistant certification exam prior to gaining employment. Online medical assistant courses worth their salt usually make this step nothing more than a formality for most students however.
